The US military launched a 103 miniature swarming drones from a fighter during a test in California. The US military has a way of experimenting with cutting edge technology long before it eventually makes its way to the general public
The BBC reports the Pentagon ran trials with a new air defense system that involves deploying a litany of swarming mini-drones from a fighter jets.Three F/A-18 Super Hornets were used to release the Perdix drones in last year.A military expert said the devices, can be able to dodge air defense systems, were likely to be used for surveillance.
Perdix are not pre-programmed synchronized individuals, they are a collective organism, sharing one distributed brain for decision-making and adapting to one another like swarms in nature", said Director of Strategic Capabilities William Roper
Every Perdix communicates and collaborate with every other Perdix, the swarm has no leader and it can adapt to drones entering or exiting the team. The drones were designed by Engineering students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and were first modified for military testing in 2013
